The Paris marriage is known as Lagan. Traditional Parsi wedding invitation cards are used for inviting the guests.  The ceremony is attended by relatives & friends; it takes places with much enthusiasm. The customs are quite different from a traditional wedding in Hindu community. The rituals are unique and Parsis enjoy every bit of it. It lasts almost for a week.  You can decide from weeklong celebration how things could be in the marriage. The wedding can be broadly divided into three stages the first being the pre wedding, then comes the marriage day and the finally the post wedding ceremony.

The pre wedding ceremonies commences with Rupia Peravanu, which is termed as unofficial engagement. The female relatives of groom visit the bride’s home and gift her silver coins as sign of good omen. The same ritual takes place again at the groom’s place with the girl’s side giving him the Shagun.

Madhavsaro:

The next ceremony that takes place is Madhavsaro. In this, the family members plant trees. The trees are planted in separate pots then placed at the entrance of the home of bride & groom respectively. They give water to the plants for eight days then it is subsequently planted somewhere else.

This ritual is very much similar to Haldi ceremony in Hindus. It takes places just a day prior to the big day. Five married women are selected for applying turmeric paste on groom & bride.

Nahan:

As per this ceremony the bride and groom take bath in their respective homes with purified water.

Ceremony on wedding day:

Achumichu:

The Achumichu is a ritual performed by the mother of the groom. She puts items like eggs, rice, dates, coconut, betel in plate and circles it seven times over the head of groom after that all the items are thrown on the floor.

Ara Antar:

This is an interesting ceremony, in this bride & groom sit in front of each other with a cloth separating them.

Circling the couple with string:

Just after this, the priest encircles the couples using a string. It is wrapped around them seven times. At the seventh round the couple throws rice over each other. The interesting thing is that it is believed the first person to throw the rice will have an upper hand in life. After this fascinating ceremony the couples sit side by side still tied together with strings.

Chero Bandhvanu:

Rose petals and rice are showered on the couple, then exchange of rings take place.

Haath Borvanu:

The Haath Borvanu is a fun filled ritual. The sister of the bride try to tease the groom by spilling milk on his shoes, or puts hands into his drinking water and ask for money for taking the seven strands that are binding the bride & groom together.

Post wedding ceremony:

The wedding reception is grand affair with foot tapping music, great dance and mouthwatering Parsi delicacies. Once the function is over the couple start their journey towards the groom’s home.
